Expectations for Participants

What are the expectations of each person involved in the process?

The facilitation of a restorative environment promotes active listening, constructive dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding.

The Individual harmed

The expectation for the individual who has been harmed includes:

  • Having the opportunity to express the impact of the harm caused
  • Feeling they are in a safe and supportive environment where they feel heard and respected.

Individual who caused the harm

For the individual that has caused harm, the expectation is that they will actively engage in the amend making process. This includes:

  • Meeting with the Restorative Justice Facilitator before the conference
  • Engaging in meaningful and constructive dialogue throughout their involvement
  • Showing genuine remorse and empathy towards the individual or individuals that have been harmed
  • Take a collaborative approach in creating and fulfilling the restorative agreement

Community Members and Parents

  • Provide support to both the individual who what harmed and the individual who caused the harm
  • Provide a community or family perspective about the situation and its impact.
  • Be a presence.  Sometimes just being present to show support often provides more help than offering verbal input.
  • Show that you care about all participants and have a willingness to provide ongoing support after the Conference is competed.
