The main aspect of this program is the Restorative Justice Conference. The conference is a structured meeting between the youth who has received a citation (caused harm), the person that was harmed, and the community that has been affected by the event. The goal of the conference is to provide a safe place to discuss the event that resulted, allow the youth who caused the hard to be accountable, and to work together as a community on how to best repair the harm that has been done.
Conferences provide the community, and others, with an opportunity to sit with the youth, express their feelings, ask questions, and assist with a positive outcome. The youth will hear firsthand how their behavior has affected people. By participating, the youth will begin to repair the harm they have caused by apologizing, making amends, and agreeing to natural and logical consequences that enhance learning.
The video below provides an example of what may occur during the conference. This is only an example and not all aspects may take place during a JJAB Restorative Justice Conference.
