Love Los Alamos: Freedom Church
Love Los Alamos is a series in which Resource Specialist Teresa Romero highlights a partner or resource doing good in our community, and making our jobs at JJAB that much easier.
I recently sat down with Freedom Church Pastor Mike Brake and volunteer Lynn Bjorklund to learn a but more about their church, which is one of the many wonderful organizations that JJAB reaches out to to assist with resources for Los Alamos County Residents.
Freedom Church is young, just five years old with a birthdate in 2018. In that time they have grown to serve more than 120 parishioners. During the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic the church moved to on-line worship, and in that time time of uncertainty many volunteers gathered to see how they could assist the community. They knew that many families in the community needed assistance with different day-to-day challenges, and came together to help ease those challenges. Some of the services they provided include providing transportation, shopping for families who had compromised immune systems, doing yard work, and setting up technology for online school and/or work.
Freedom Church has been a consistent collaborator for JJAB, most often helping families in hardship with financial assistance. Pastor Mike told me, "All we have comes from God; if we can assist with resources such as time, skills, or financial resources to help others, we will."
Sunday worship is held at 11am at Aspen Elementary in the gym, as well as online (via Facebook live). Children K-6 are welcome to attend Freedom Kids on Sundays with Seth Evans. They also offer Connect small groups, which allow parishioners to build community on a smaller scale. Groups are held at various times and locations throughout the week and include categories such as Young Adult, Bible Study, Men's Breakfast Group, and Celebrate Recovery.
